Pre-Conference Workshop: Cardiovascular Pharmacology
2012 AAHFN 8th Annual Meeting
Cardiovascular Pharmacology
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 • 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
The Gleacher Center/University of Chicago Booth School of Business
(One Block from the Sheraton)
This workshop will address the need for a thorough course in the principles of pharmacotherapeutics with a focus on cardiovascular medications. Prescribing has long been a major component of the role of advanced practice nurses, but it has become more complex, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease where polypharmacy is more prevalent and the risk for adverse interactions is increased.
This course will be taught by Nurse Practitioners and Physicians in an intensive format and will include content on pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, ACE inhibitors/Angiotesin Receptor Blockers, beta-blockers, anti-lipidemic agents, diuretics, and medications indicated for use in decompensated heart failure. In order to reinforce the principles presented, case-based scenarios will be utilized.
The Cardiovascular Pharmacology Course is intended to partially meet the pharmacology requirements for recertification beginning January 1, 2014, as detailed by the American Nurses Credentialing Corporation. (Please refer to www.nursecredentialing.org for further information on this change in requirements).
Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- Describe how volume distribution, pKa, p450 metabolism and protein binding affect the performance of selected cardiovascular drugs
- Identify the rationale for use of these drug classes in the management of cardiac patients: beta blockers, ACE-I, ARBs, diuretics, dyslipedemic, and decompensated heart failure
- Discuss the scientific guidelines for care from a case-based approach
Seating is limited.
